One cannot be too careful these days, and when it comes to taking trips and flying from a major airport, it is essential that your vehicle be secured. Making use of airport parking will ensure your vehicle remains safe until your return.

It is advantageous for travellers to be able to drive themselves and minimizes the need to enlist the assistance of someone else to provide a trip to catch a flight. An active individual can monitor their own time and not have another\’s schedule impact their itinerary. Being able to manage the situation keeps down feelings of anxiety and allows one to enjoy the trip.

Many travellers weigh the pros and cons of driving to the airport and it can be quite a challenge, what with the congestion of the hundreds, if not thousands, of fellow travellers flying out from the same airport at any given time. One of the considerations is where they might leave their car if they are going to be away for an extended period of time.

A few factors affect the decision to drive and use a parking structure. If the traveller will be gone a particularly long time, he tends to think whether the vehicle will remain secure and whether it is worth it to have the care idle for so long. He wonders if the security of the car merits the fee to be charged.

Parking structures are designed to provide maximum security for the driver\’s vehicle. Staff is provided whose exclusive purpose is to monitor that area of the airport. The cars are tracked with a numbering system and stored where there is enhanced visibility for the parking staff. Generally the parking is conveniently located to provide easy access from the parking area to where the passengers will board the flight.

Leaving a car parked unattended on the street for many consecutive days, like during a holiday period, could encourage the vandalism or theft by people with criminal tendencies. A person walking back and forth could become aware that the vehicle is vulnerable. Keeping a vehicle in a safe place such as the parking area of an airport, could ensure optimum safety.

Parking one\’s car in airport parking before getting on the airplane is a logical thing to do and can set the traveller\’s mind at ease that its safety will maintained and the car will be in good condition when he returns. By having the car nearby when returning from a flight, the driver can be quickly on his way and not have to find a rental car, taxi cab or wait for a lift.

The decision to park one\’s car at an airport while taking a flight should be an easy one to make. The benefit of having a secured place to leave it justifies the nominal fee for the parking service. It also cuts down on the challenge associated with arranging rides to and from the airport.

Serious sports bettors often dismiss futures wagers as sucker bets targeted at \’squares\’ looking for a big payoff. For example, a typical futures \’sucker bet\’ would be something like betting that Harvard will win the NCAA basketball tournament at 500/1 odds. Sure, the potential payback is huge but here\’s the problem–the \”true odds\” of Harvard winning the NCAA hoops tournament are astronomical, and certainly well in excess of 500/1. That means that from the outset this bet represents a poor wagering value.

Even for the more pragmatic bettor, the inherent problems with futures wagers are readily apparent. You have to tie up your wagering capital for a long time. More significantly, once your bet is down you\’re at the mercy of the countless interceding events that can influence the fortunes of a sports team. Its hard enough trying to weigh the significance of scheduling, injuries, personnel movement and so forth on a day to day basis. Controlling for all of these variables over an entire season is impossible.

So futures plays have no relevance to a serious approach to sports handicapping? Not necessarily. It\’s crucial to think of the sports betting discipline in terms of value. Used properly, futures wagers are frequently a good way of maximizing line value and finding overlay situations. Here are some ways in which future wagers can be successfully leveraged.

The early bird gets the worm. The early bettor gets the value: Many sports books offer non-sports proposition bets, including entertainment based wagers like the Academy Awards. Someone who enjoys following the industry and keeping up-to-date on whats happening in Hollywood can get a decided edge over the bookmaker, who doesn\’t have the time to stay juiced in to industry news and gossip.

Some books even take bets on the major awards like \’Best Picture\’ and \’Best Director\’ before the nominations are actually announced. In this situation, a bettor who can read the \’buzz\’ on which films will be nominated can find substantially better values before the nominations are announced.

Making the Academy Awards an even better candidate for futures wagers is the nature of the film business itself. The release schedule for films is set well in advance, and after the year end cut off date no \’surprise\’ releases can sneak in to consideration. At this point, its relatively easy to narrow down the serious contenders and with some work to come up with a \’short list\’ of Oscar candidates.

Taking a position for profit: Now well turn our attention to sports and how to use the futures wager there. As I noted above, sports inherently presents more variables than the film industry. Furthermore, the top teams are usually not priced for value. Currently you can get +650 on New England to eventually win the 2010 Superbowl. The Patriots are certainly capable of winning, but the value just isn\’t there.

The place to find value in this sort of proposition is to look at the less obvious teams. A few years ago an associate of mine took positions on several teams NHL that started slowly, including the Calgary Flames at 40/1. By the end of the regular season they were down to prices as low as 5/1 or 6/1.

This play wasn\’t based on any sort of certainty that this team would win the Stanley Cup, but rather on the value they presented. In other words, the true odds of this dark horse Cup win is more in the range of the current price so the 40/1 is a clear overlay. Once the playoffs begin, this sort of positional play offers a lot of options to hedge and to lock in a profit.

Also, don\’t forget to consider \’the field\’. Many futures wagers lump a number of teams or competitors together as \’the field\’ and offer a single price to bet them all. Occasionally, the quick thinking handicapper can find unique value situations. For example, after Dale Earnhardt\’s tragic death in 2001 some sportsbooks continued to offer a \’field\’ position on rookie of the year. A bettor who followed NASCAR closely would have quickly realized that Kevin Harvick–who replaced Earnhardt in his Richard Childress racing Chevy–qualified for the \’rookie of the year\’ award and could have bet the field at prices as high as 15/1. After he won his first race, the price for \’the field\’ dropped to 2/1 and by midseason \’the field\’ was a -250 favorite.

Clearly the Harvick play was a \’best case scenario\’ but there are other instances where value can be had on \’the field\’. While sportsbooks have learned a lot about NASCAR in recent years, up until a few years ago it was frequently possible to find a \’field\’ bet on road course races that included the \’specialists\’ that teams frequently hire for these events. In other words, it was possible to bet a group of road course \’ringers\’ such as Ron Fellows, Scott Pruett and Robbie Gordon with one wager. Again, you have to keep your eyes open and be ready to act quickly to take advantage of these rare opportunities.

As a postscript, I want to emphasize the importance on shopping around any futures play for the best price. Shopping points is a smart thing to do on any wager, but the differences from book to book are frequently most extreme with futures plays. A little legwork can yield a substantially better price and the resulting better value.

Stu Ungar didn\’t have much going for him in most areas of life. In fact, it could very well be argued that he was downright inept in most areas of existence. He also had a self destructive streak that manifest itself in heavy drug use and other behaviors. Ungar, however, had one great gift–he was a prodigy with a deck of cards. He would become one of the first superstars of poker before it became a fixture on ESPN, but wouldn\’t live to enjoy the \’boom\’. Ungar would eventually be done in by his baser elements, and would be found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room in November,\’88.

For those unfamiliar with the big guns of high stakes poker, the only way to describe Ungar\’s abilities is a metaphorical comparison to sports. With a green felt table and a deck of cards involved, Ungar was \’Jordan-esque\’. With Ungar, his greatest accomplishment was undoubtedly three World Series of Poker victories-a feat not unlike MJ\’s six NBA titles. Texas Hold-em poker, the game of choice for the cognoscenti, is a seemingly simple game that belies its deceptive complexity. The successful player needs to be able to instantaneously plan strategy based on a number of ever shifting variables. Countless volumes have been written on the subject, but Ungar was able to perform complex analysis and strategy with amazing speed-almost instinctively. Between his three WSOP victories, and countless more informal victories and profitable poker room sessions, Ungar won millions of dollars playing poker. The amazing subtext to Ungar\’s sheer mastery of Texas Hold\’em was the fact that it was the third card game he had mastered. Ungar first came to Las Vegas as a gin rummy prodigy; he had beaten all of the good players on the East Coast and moved to the desert mecca in search of new opportunities. He had soon run the table of Nevada\’s gin players, and then turned to blackjack out of necessity. He was quickly barred as a card counter at a number of Southern Nevada casinos. Needing a new vocation, he took up poker.

Ungar\’s problem was that he was awful at basic survival skills. He fought a number of addictions-most notably to drugs and sports gambling. After his WSOP win in\’97, he was nearly broke and wasted away from drug use by the time the\’98 tournament rolled around. Vegas casino owner Bob Stupak provided the $10,000 he needed to defend his title, but as the games began Ungar cowered in his darkened hotel room unable to pull himself together enough to play.

Other stories of Ungar\’s troubled life away from the poker tables evoke the same theme: buying a new Mercedes with cash after a WSOP victory and driving it until it fell apart from lack of maintenance; signing mortgage papers as he played in the Dunes poker room; losing 1.5 million dollars betting on sports or golf in the course of a weekend on more than one occasion.

Sadly, Ungar\’s death came as a ray of hope had entered his life. Noted casino owner and longtime friend Bob Stupak had stepped in to help Ungar pay off his debts, clean up his life, and provide the stake money to enter the major poker tournaments. Ungar was found two days after the two had formalized the agreement in a contract. Ungar also left behind an ex-wife and a teenage daughter, who still live in Las Vegas. The official cause of death was listed as \”coronary atherosclerosis\” and a mixture of drugs including cocaine, methadone and Percodan were found in his system.

Many of the famous gamblers of Las Vegas legend such as Puggy Person and Doyle Brunson have been tough, larger than life individuals with a healthier than normal dose of self-preservation skills. In this respect, Ungar was an anomaly among gambling greats-he was physically frail and almost completely helpless away from the poker table. At the table, however, he became an almost unbeatable adversary. His story is certainly not one that the modern day, publicity conscious Las Vegas will celebrate. He will be remembered, however, as part of the tradition that gives the city its unique character. From the mobsters that pioneered the city, to the Rat Pack that civilized it, to the corporations that cleaned it up, characters like Stu Ungar have provided Las Vegas with its unique character.

Many people wonder why they get charged one rate at a Super 8. airport hotels and another at a Hilton when they are using nothing more than a bed. If that is the case, they may be staying at the wrong type of hotel facilities and could use a little guidance as to what to expect based on the top of property that they are staying. Lodging comes in three different tiers and each one of them is meant to service a specific market.

The lowest level of amenities will be received at extended stay properties. These are properties that are strictly meant for longer stays that will not cost as much money as any other type of hotel or motel. The reason the rates are so low is because they do not usually offer the types of amenities that people would generally expect from a hotel.

It is a rare extended stay property that will have a rate anywhere near $100/night. The longer the guest is staying, the more likely that the rate will be lower. For this generous rate, they get very little other than a bed and a parking spot. There will usually be laundry facilities of some type and maid service will be very limited.

One step up would be considered limited service properties. These are properties like the Garden Inn or Days Inn. Room rates are a little higher, but there is not much more in the way of the typical hotel amenities. Owners of these properties make some of the highest profits in the industry so you can expect them to be clean, but they will be run very tight.

Maid service in limited service properties will usually be a daily occurrence, unless they are at the bottom tier of the scale. They may even only offer it on request. While some of them offer meeting rooms and banquet space, it is very limited. There may or may not be a restaurant on property and will probably offer a continental breakfast for their guests.

The hotels with the best hotel facilities are known as full service hotels. For these amenities, the guest can expect to pay considerably more. A nice travel tip is to look for full service hotels that are surrounded by limited service hotels. They will have to drop their rates to stay competitive in their market.

Types of full service hotels would be properties such as Hilton and Marriott. They are typical of full service hotels in that they treat their VIP members like gold. Their highest levels can expect free breakfast, a welcome amenity, honor bar with free hours d\’ oeuvres and express check ins. These types of properties are generally required to have a full service restaurant, health spa, snack shop along with high end banquet facilities.

If a travel is doing nothing more than sleeping in their room, why waste the money at a full service hotel. A place like the Garden Inn will still offer a free continental and a high level of service. When the guest wants to be pampered, pay the few extra dollars and take advantage of the hotel facilities that are offered.
