How To Save A Marriage In Therapy

Posted by: Roy Anderson | Comments (0)

Why is it that most couples end up in therapy or counseling of some variety when their marriage gets so confusing and painful that they can’t bear it themselves? There is an assumption that a third party will somehow be able to save a marriage by doing some of the work. So, how does this really work for them?

Before you go into a counseling session with your spouse, both of you need to understand that it is not the definite cure to all of your problems. You cannot hire someone else to do the dirty work and make things all better, no matter how skilled they may be.

People that go into their sessions expecting the therapist or counselor to validate their own thoughts and feelings and fix the problems that they see in their mate are the ones that come out disappointed. What a therapist really provides is objectivity, not validation. The mindset has to be different if this approach is going to work for the couple.

You both have things that you do completely right and other things that you are screwing up. The job of a couples therapist is to help you sort out the real issues from the futile so that you can fix this mess you mutually created.

The issues that must eventually be brought to light during therapy are the ones that lie beneath all the petty squabbling. A husband may argue to death that his wife never cleans the house but the real issue is likely that he feels she does not love and value him enough to keep the house clean for when he comes home from work. That is the issue the therapist cares about.

If you don’t fix the deeper issues the marriage will only continue to unravel.

So, what do you do to make your sessions actually work? You go in with a selfless attitude. You just listen to what your spouse has to say without getting up in arms or being defensive. You have to genuinely listen to how they think and feel without placing blame.

A husband who flies off the handle because his wife says she is lonely may shout out that he has to work because she sits at home with the kids earning nothing. This is defensiveness that prevents him from really hearing that she is lonely. This is what doesn’t work.

In order to save a marriage with the help of therapy, this husband would have to be willing to quietly listen to his wife talk about the loneliness without automatically assuming it is directed as an assault on him. He has to listen selflessly for it to work.

Straight Marriages – Gay Unions

Posted by: Barry Jones | Comments (0)

The debate on gay marriages has been a very hot political topic for many years and because it is so hot a topic, the number of cities that have come out publicly either for or against the topic is not so astounding. While there are few states which actually allow gay or same-sex marriages, there are some that are more liberal, affording almost equal rights. Massachusetts is currently the only state in the United States that allows same-sex marriages. The state of Rhode Island is generous enough to recognize as a legal marriage any same-sex marriage that is carried out in Massachusetts, which is considered a major victory by many same-sex supporters.

Elections of latter years have seen this as a very hot subject and with the White House stating publicly that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, not same-sexes, many states have been very reluctant to sanction same-sex marriages. However, a few states have permitted same-sex civil unions, which is very similar to marriage.

These states are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, and Vermont. The District of Columbia also recognizes same-sex unions and the Governor of New Hampshire has stated publicly that he will soon sign a bill giving the OK to same-sex unions. This is a major advance for those who support the movement.

While many states have not given the go-ahead on the issue of same-sex marriage, there are states which are sitting around discussing the issue. Many couples who are struggling for their rights have argued that there is just no difference in the way they run their households compared with their heterosexual counterparts. They have also stated that while they may be with a partner who is the same sex as them, they do still love their partner and should have the legal right to marry them too.

This has always been a contentious subject, and likely will continue to be a hot issue for many years to come. With the issues raging within the states and at the national level, it will probably be a very long time before the gay and lesbian rights groups are able to truly declare a victory for their cause. Nevertheless, there is some solace to be taken in the small triumphs as they occur, and another Governor of a state being ready to permit a civil union is at least a move in the direction of triumph.

However, the fact remains that the views of the individual states tend to reflect the views of the President. With a President in office who is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage as well as civil union, it is unlikely to allow much room for many triumphs until a more accommodating, or rather liberal, President is in the White House. Time will tell what President Obama’s views are.

After the bill has passed through all the channels of state, it will go into effect as early as the next year for the New Hampshire residents, who have been waiting patiently. Each state that gives this right to its residents opens the door to more states to become more tolerant. Finally, this paves the way for America to join most of Europe in recognizing the legal inequalities of straight and gay couples nationwide.

All right, no more procrastinating, this is the time you have been waiting for and it’s up to you to turn it into reality. But, how can you get that fantasy date? You have to start from the beginning and that means to invite the person you are interested in out. Well, how should you invite a person out? Do you have to be assertive? Do you need to be coy? Perhaps you could do with a few tips to ask someone out?

The following are quite simple but yet essential tips you can use when you find it hard asking a person out on a date. These tips are great when you want to invite out someone you fancy. Firstly, know the right reason or reasons for asking a person out. When you know the real reason(s), the right words will surely come to you.

What if the person you fancy says no? Well, don’t take a rebuttal to heart and definitely don’t expect it. Take it gracefully and perhaps you could even have a light-hearted joke ready for the occasion. However, for some people, it might be worth practising the words you want to say. To achieve this, try to keep the reasons for the date upper most in your mind.

However, the person might say “yes” and then you should have a suggestion ready where to go, otherwise it seems as if you have not given it much thought. As much as possible, be ready with some ideas. See to it that you know how to answer, if the person asks you why you are asking her out. You do not have to over-flatter, but you have to make sure that you make the person feel good. In this way, you can show how thoughtful you are, but never pressure someone to go out with you.

If you did, the result would probably be negative. And don’t pressure them to tell you why it is a “no”. Also never stand someone up. This means that when you ask a person out, you mean it and you do not leave her waiting for nothing. If the person says no, do not be bitter about it. You just have to move on and not treat that person badly. Having some alcohol to boost your confidence is a no no.

It may just put you in an even worse situation. You have to be confident naturally. The more, the better, but not on a first date. If you want to invite someone out for a date, don’t do it when she is with a group of friends.

These are really useful recommendations and you really ought to take notice of them. They will certainly assist you if you want to take out your special person.
