When you commission the building of your website, the biggest focus for you and quite often your designer is the design. We all want our sites to look great with great graphics, but quite often the trade off comes with functionality.

Your website should be a working tool for your business, it should be a 24/7 sales man, bringing you business so that every time you check your emails you have new leads waiting to be converted into sales.

The purpose of a website will obviously vary depending on what your business is, but either way your site must have a purpose! It could be to gather contact details for contact at a later date, it could be to generate enquiries from potential customers to whom you then reply with a quote, or it could sell your products automatically, but the important thing to ensure is that it has a purpose and is not simply there for the sake of it.

Once you know the purpose of your site, you should think about calls to action. Your site should have a call to action on each page i.e. each visitor has some kind of action to take once they’ve read the content on the page. The content of your pages should be structured as follows, identify the problem that a visitor of your site would have, explain how you can solve it, provide an easy, simple way for the prospect to contact you.

Only once you have this in place so that your site works like a proper Sales Funnel should you concentrate on generating traffic to your site. Traffic generation presents another potential issue for many web designers. In order for your website to be able to function at its best in the search engines, you will need to avoid some functionality.

So to avoid having to completely re-do your website in order to get traffic, the best course of action is to consult an experienced SEO company before you commission the building of your site to a designer.
