Wooden Roofs

One of the roofing materials commonly used is wood shingles. They are made from western red cedar which is very strong and resistant to insect damage. Also, some are made from preservative-treated pine.

Shingles and shakes come in varying lengths, usually 16, 18, or 24 inches, and in random widths. Wood shingles are relatively smooth; deeply grooved, rough-hewn shingles are called shakes. They have a more rustic appearance.

The average life span of wood shingles can be between 15 to 40 years. It basically depends on the climatic conditions of the area, their exposure and the slope of the roof. Usually if the roof is steep enough, it will live for a longer period as rain water, ice and snow will not accumulate there.

If you have found any kind of defect in your roof like any leaking problem or damaged shingles which may be caused by heavy winds or rain, you should immediately inspect your entire roof as these small defects can turn into real big hassles later on. Some common signs of defects are water stains or wetness in the attic.

You can easily repair a shingle that is lifted from the roof. Re-nail it and close it with the cement. Closing the gap between the two pieces to repair a split shingle is a decent enough option. However, cracked and broken shingles are not repairable. It is advised to replace them at once.

As an intelligent being one should keep in mind that if the roof is steeply pitched or when its damp, one should not attempt to work on it. Instead, working in a dry and clear weather is advisable.

Areas around the big trees with heavy shade lead to the growth of moss. Particularly in moist climates, trees should be cut back so that the sunlight can creep in back in the same way as hosing does. Using a power washer by the specialist can also be kept in mind as a way to remove the moss.
