Conceptualized from the original classroom chalkboard, whiteboards was introduced in the 60’s and since become the most preferred tool or medium for educational purposes and utilized in training rooms, business meetings, in board roams and especially classrooms. Whiteboards uses dry erase markers instead of the traditional chalk. Due to the allergens that may come from chalks, the dry erase markers are more favored for its ergonomic benefits.

The traditional chalkboard, although useful and still used in some primary educational systems has several disadvantages. One common disadvantage of chalk is the messy white residue that would often cover the instructor and their attire by the end of the lecture or business meeting. Chalk is also associated with allergy producing dust and other potential health risks. Thus, the white board is often preferred because of the dry erase marker’s hypo-allergenic qualities and because of its versatility, it can also serve as a projection screen during presentations. Since the’80s, many companies and educational systems have chosen to replace the traditional chalk board with the whiteboard.

Five types of materials that compose white boards are the following:

Melamine White Boards

One of the first materials incorporated in the construction of whiteboards. The surface this material produce can easily be scratched and in time, it is more difficult to remove the markings. The ink is easily absorbed into the board that it needs to be replaced in just months of usage. Made with a pressboard substrate which is covered in paper with resin, this material is the least expensive.

Aluminum White Boards or Painted Steel

Painted steel or aluminum whiteboards are often preferred over melamine. They typically last longer than melamine white boards and are easier to erase. Though not as prevalent, the problem of staining is still a problem in this particular solution because of the porous nature of the paint sprayed on an aluminum or steel surface. Painted steel has a magnetic property, whereas, painted aluminum does not.

Glass White Boards

This material doesn’t absorb any ink so therefore, there no need to replace it every once in a while. The only down side to this is that it does not have magnetic properties.

Hardcoat Laminate White Boards

Hardcoat Laminate is regularly the material of option for the whiteboard in high practice environments. The surface is less permeable and therefore, moderately stain resistant. Because of its stain resistance and scratch resistant properties lots of laminate white boards come with lifetime warranties. This, of course, is helpful for the purchaser. These whiteboard surfaces may or may not hold magnetic properties dependent upon the maker.

(Porcelain)Enamel-On-Steel White Boards

With our new drive for environmental friendly products this certain material, porcelain, is remarkable for its environmental official recognition. Though not all porcelain whiteboards have environmental certification, it is likely to get a white board that does. Majority of these whiteboard surfaces hold a lifetime warranty and are scratch proof due to the manufacturing process. The production process consists of heating ceramic glass against a steel surface within a kiln. This process creates a greater whiteboard surface that is highly advantageous among white board regulars.

This type of whiteboard can be effortlessly cleaned with any non-abrasive cleaner and possesses a polarizing steel surface which lets magnets to be employed with the equipment. The porcelain surface also answers the setback of residual dry erase marks that often stay even after erasing.

Even if the weaknesses of the whiteboard are negligible, some are documented. Those with image impairments may frequently have complexity presentation the in sequence of the whiteboard as of the luster of the lights on the white surfaces. Screening information on a chalk board is normally more convenient for the visually disabled since the dark surface is less attracted to glare. Moreover, one cannot simply expect the lifetime of dry erase markers, while, the lifetime of a bit of chalk is observable to the consumer.
